Death Duties
Book Design
In her book Death Duties, Sally Berkovic writes about her involvement in the Chevra Kadisha, the Jewish burial society.
It is a publication which is intended to promote important, yet difficult conversations about one’s death and legacy with friends and family.
During the pandemic it was challenging to connect with artists in order to secure rights for their images. We made lemonade with typographic approach to the book’s interior. The Kaddish, a mourner’s prayer was divided into seven parts which appear at the start of each chapter.
The chapter artwork was particualrly enjoyable to work on - I found a way to make the typography of the congregation chance bleed into the background as though it was made of watercolour or very runny ink.
